DECISIONS · UNCERTAINTY

Why do decisions feel so hard?

Sometimes we are not agonizing over the two options. We are agonizing over the thought: “I should already know.”

Why can a decision become an inner struggle?

Should I stay or leave? Send the message? Take the job? Begin the relationship? Move house? When an answer is not clear, the mind tries to create one. It replays conversations, searches for signs, asks for advice, builds scenarios, and tries to reach certainty. Each round is supposed to bring clarity, but sometimes it only adds noise.

The struggle can intensify when we believe that uncertainty means something is wrong with us.

Not every decision needs to be solved right now

You are allowed not to know. You can leave a question open. That is not necessarily avoidance. Sometimes it is the only way to let missing information arrive. Some decisions feel clear quickly. Others need time. Some begin to settle when we stop holding them in our minds all day.

How can you notice when the mind has taken over?

When those thoughts loop, pause and ask a different question: why does it feel so urgent to know right now?

What can happen when you release the demand for an answer?

Nothing dramatic has to happen. You keep living. Another conversation takes place, circumstances change, a feeling softens, one option becomes less appealing, or a next step begins to feel more natural. The decision can start to organize itself instead of feeling like a test.
